[Edited 6.25.09 - Added an example of great critique and a little introduction. :> And news'd -> [link] ]

You know what I'm talking about-- that one critique sitting on your deviation that delivers a painful sting. You can ignore it, work on it, or make drama about it, but hide them as you might, those sour feelings can persist for a very long time.

But who says we have to suffer through some people's callous words, and try to "fix" what's "wrong" with our art? And who says that we have to sound like complete assholes when we deliver critique?
Who says we need to "accept the real world as it is"?

Anyone who says such things, I think, has given up on society's powers to better itself. And I personally believe these attitudes are what stall the progress.

I'm sure all of us can deliver critique WITHOUT the sting--all we need is better communication. Here are my suggestions on how to impart wisdom in an effective way, by supporting the artist with careful words of respect and understanding.

The two images above should do most of the talking. I hope I was able to get my message across. :]

To summarize,

:bulletred:If anyone has ever called you an asshole for a critique, I suggest taking a look at the phrasing. I'm sure there's a nicer way to say it... and a nicer critique goes a long way.

:bulletred:If you're already doing this, great! The world can truly benefit from your words of wisdom.

:bulletred:Overall, please note that it's not about the CONTENT of the critique--the wisdom--but also the PRESENTATION of said critique. After all, what's the point of wisdom if no one listens?

Of course, I am not asking everyone to agree with me; I'm just asking that you think about it.

I hope people find this useful, and thanks so much for reading.

:bulletgreen:Most of these ideas are from the book below. I highly recommend it. :>

"Ya'll got to be kidding
Man, some of ya'll treat art like it was some sort of religion
Following the rules one two and on through
To the point you don't create art
Art created you"

I think the chart is pure genius if you don't mind me saying that. :) I can never think of constructive critique so I don't do that. ^^;
:iconpuka-berries:
Lol Cire, love the chart. 8D But I totally agree, I've gotten rude comments over the past, and usually just ignore them.
:iconlancha:
nice.
With this even the most........ "awesome" critics should understand. ... hopefully XD
